#6 - Michael

It had been many years since he had been here on God’s greatest creation but sometimes circumstance dictated action.  The demon, Belial, was upsetting the balance of the cosmos and that required action.  It was he that had sent the young angel, David, to deal with the matter.  Michael had known that Belial was too powerful for him, but he felt that angelic intervention would scare the demon into backing down from his action.  God had asked for diplomacy and in all matters Michael respected and obeyed his majesty.  When it became apparent that this situation would not be settled in the appropriate way, Michael made the decision to get his hands dirty, to quote the humans.  He was the archangel, the leader of the heavenly army.  He had fought Lucifer in the holy war and had cast him down to hell.  He was God’s champion, his right hand.  Michael was often referred by the humans as the hand of God.  This was a crude but accurate portrayal of who he was and what he did.

He looked to Belial calmly.  The demon was surprised to see him and definitely angry.  He hadn’t expected this it would seem.  “Belial, what is the meaning of this?”  “I don’t have to answer to you.”  “Really?  Do you know what I am?”  “A thorn in our side,” the demon replied full of obvious hatred.  “I am the archangel," Michael responded.  “The champion of heaven, the deliverer of cosmic justice.”  Belial just stared with black eyes of grim hatred.  Michael could only guess what he was thinking.  “Why are you here?  Why are you breaking our laws?”  Belial took a step forward and raised his hands.  “What? You actually think you stand a chance of fighting me?”  Lightning crackled from Belial’s hands, Michael raised a hand and the lightning dissipated.  With a wave of his hand he threw Belial backwards.  “Demon, I asked you a question," he asked quietly and calmly, yet forcefully.  Belial got back to his feet and threw fireballs at the archangel.  Michael batted them away with his sword.  This was getting him nowhere.  He had to deal with this diplomatically and that meant not destroying Belial.  “Are you done, or would you like to try something else?”  Belial snarled and lightning fizzled from one hand to another.  “More tricks,” Michael smiled.  “This is getting very tiresome and I have better things to do than deal with a disobedient servant.”  “Such arrogance,” Belial said with a note of hatred and obvious resentment.  “You are the embodiment of all that we despise.”  “That may be true but it doesn’t change the rules.”

Michael noticed that the human was watching from the window.  It was unfortunate that he had become caught up in this cosmic skirmish, but that couldn’t be helped.  Soon a decision would need to be made.  God had left that decision in his hands which had surprised him in all truth.

Lightning came forth from the demons hands towards the archangel.  Michael blocked the lightning with a hand as easily as wind may be stopped by a closed door.  Belial was no match for Michael and Belial knew it.  The archangel knew the answers to the questions that he asked.  The real question however, was how to deal with Belial.  A column of fire erupted from the ground and manifested into a man.  That man was wearing a black suit with longcoat and long black hair.  His eyes were black.  “Hello Michael,” he said and forced a hand in the archangel’s direction, launching him into the air.  Michael crashed into a tree before collapsing to the ground.
